Why might a credit card be declined?

Here are some common reasons that a credit card may be declined:

  • Incorrect credit card number
  • Incorrect mailing address associated with credit card account
  • Incorrect cvv (card verification value)codes – last 3 digits on the back of the credit card
  • Incorrect expiration date
  • Credit card limit exceeded
  • Credit card has not been activated
  • Credit card only allows certain dollar amount per transaction
  • Credit card account has been closed
  • Credit card has expired
  • Credit card company has detected fraudulent activity and acct has been closed
  • If debit acct --- checking account has been closed
